On May 18th, in Chisinau, the Extraordinary Congress of the Community of Ukrainians from Moldova - the largest organization of Ukrainians in this country, was held in order to elect a new president of the country. The reason for convening an extraordinary congress was dictated by the death of the founder and president of this organization, a member of the UVKR Presidium, Mr. Nikolai K. Oliynyk.

         The Congres was attended by: representatives of local organizations of other Ukrainian communities from Moldova, CURM delegates from all the districts of the Republic of Moldova and deputies of Republic of Moldova. There were also present at this event: A. Babenko, the head of the Interethnic Relations Agency, N.Terzi, the head of the Moldovan Gagauz community and guests from Ukraine. The Union of Ukrainians in Romania was represented by Mr. Daniel Serdenciuk, vice president of the Iasi branch of UUR, since the president of the subsidiary, for objective reasons, could not participate in this event.
